1 Timothy 6:10 – For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
You see, many people think their problem in life is money. “If I had enough money, I would have done this, I would have done that” they say.
But in reality, you can never have enough money. The more money you amass, the more you wish to amass, hence, the economic language, “human wants are insatiable”.
A man who was being paid #50,000 per month may be living comfortably, but when his salary is increased, that’s when he begins to think about buying what he could not buy when he was being paid #50,000. At the end of the day, he looks back and see that he was even living happier and better when he was earning #50,000.
Why do you think the rich want to amass and continue to amass wealth? It is because of the insatiable nature of human wants.
Listen to me: You are poor not because of money. You are poor simply because you think you are poor.
If you earn a meagre salary or income per month, it is possible to also live according to your means and live happily too.
What you need, is not more money. What you need, is thought reconfiguration.
You need to see yourself as a child of the King like you are. Because you a child of the King, you cannot lack anything because everything is available in the house of the Lord our King.
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19).
The bible says that we have the mind of Christ, hence, we need to see as Christ sees, and think as God thinks. A man of faith sees things beyond the material consistence of the universe. Those who cannot live beyond their feelings are said to live in the soulish realm. In order to please God, we must be people who live by faith; who are not constrained or limited in thought by the human and material evidences surrounding us.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)
The bible says Abraham believed in the midst of the material evidences that surrounded him.
18 Abraham, against all hope, believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So shall thy seed be.”
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, nor yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God, (Romans 4:18-20)
Hear me. It is possible to see yourself as being rich, speak it out, and live as one because our Father is the owner of the universe. He says the cattle on a thousand hills are mine (Psalm 50:10).
Money and material possession cannot make you rich because, you cannot not be satisfied acquiring them. What you need, is finding contentment and happiness in what God has given to you. It may seem little to you, but remember you still have more than someone, somewhere. At least you eat three square meal a day, but even if you don’t, there’s someone, somewhere who doesn’t even have mouth to eat.
Listen to me beloved: You are not poor because of money. You are poor because you think you are.
Ask the richest man in the world today if he’s satisfied with money now that he has so much. Even Elon Musk who according to Investopedia is the richest man in the world in 2023, is still buying more assets, making investments, and buying property.
Hear me: What you need for true happiness is more than money. Find solace in God. Find consolation in Christ.
If you only have your daily basic needs, thank God for it.
In the ‘Our Lord’s Prayer’, Christ taught His disciples to pray: Give us this day, our daily bread.
Why is it not give us these days, our assets, our properties, our cars, our material wealth, etc.?
It is because we are asking for just today and not tomorrow. Yes! we can only be concerned about the today we have seen and not tomorrow. We can only be concerned about what is necessary to live – our daily bread.
Several of the things that people buy when their financial statuses upgrade are things they can actually do without. They are not life’s necessities. So why let your happiness depend on those?
Let me tell you what you need for true happiness. Get Christ and never leave Him; Get God and never let Him go. That is true wisdom. He said to Abraham, “I am thy exceeding great reward” (Gen. 15:1). Every resource you seek is found in Him. He is the source for the resources you seek. He is the one who can give you true joy, contentment and satisfaction. If you think money will make you rich or wealthy, it cannot. It cannot even give you joy. Many people who are rich materially today are not happy. Some complain they found more joy, peace and satisfaction when they didn’t have so much.
Before I close this chapter I’d like to leave you with this memory verse:
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy 6:10).
So, think about this and get true riches which is heavenly riches. You can store up for yourself treasures in heaven which will not rust or decay. Learn contentment from the Saviour who even had no place to lay His head.
Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. (Matthew 8:20).
Did you hear of any house, mansion or edifice built by Christ while He lived on earth? Have you heard about His private jet, fleet of cars, boats, e.t.c.? there were no cars in the days of Christ, but there were boats, there were horses and camels. Christ did not even have His own mule. He had to borrow a donkey to ride upon.
Hear me. Don’t let the Devil instigate you against your maker by making you think that God has not done anything for you. If you have money for these things fine. But that is not true joy. Never are they true wealth. They are riches that will fade away. The riches that will not fade away are those you invest in the lives of people. That’s what gives mansions in heaven.
Christ never built a house, but He build a church, His body, standing strong upon the earth today. That’s Kingdom investment.
So I challenge you beloved. Look beyond this material substance and focus your faith and hope on heavenly things. In them, true happiness lies.
